HOUSE OF THE FEDERATION

On December 1994, Ethiopia has adopted a constitution, the supreme law of the land, through representatives who have duly elected for this purpose as an instrument to bind the people in mutual commitment.

Accordingly with this constitution, Ethiopia has established a parliamentarian form of government. And it has two houses: The House of Representatives and The House of Federation.

The House of Federation is composed of representatives of Nations, Nationalities and Peoples. Each Nation, Nationality and People is represented in the House of the Federation by at least one member. One additional representative for each one million of its population shall represent each nation or nationality.

Members of the House of Federation are elected by the state Councils. The state councils may themselves elect representatives to the House of the Federation, or they may hold election to have the representatives elected by the people directly.

The House of Federation currently has 112 members represented from 69 Nations, Nationalities and Peoples across the country in the 9 state councils.
